Handling, Packaging, and Conditioning of Materials and Components Used in Automotive Interiors for Emissions Testing

2024-09-27
CURRENT
J2989_202409
This SAE Recommended Practice is intended for stakeholders of the automotive industry that are conducting emission testing on materials, parts, or components used in automotive interiors. Testing methods may specifically define the handling and packaging conditions for the material to be analyzed. In these cases, follow the method as closely as possible. Use this document as a guide where the protocol for handling and packaging the samples between production and testing may be undefined or ambiguous.

Hot Odor Test for Materials Used in Vehicle Interior Cabins

2022-05-24
CURRENT
J1351_202205
This test can be used to evaluate odor characteristics of non-metallic materials used in the interior cabin of a vehicle. The test conditions, odor panel requirements, scale for odor intensity and reporting of results are specified. The data from this test are useful when compared to data obtained from samples with known odor characteristics.

Digital Olfaction Method to Measure Odor from Materials, Parts and Assemblies used in Automotive Interiors

2021-08-16
WIP
J3263
The document describes an approach of odor testing applying instrument-based digital olfaction method, e.g. with sensor-array based technology for materials, parts and assemblies targeted for use in automotive interiors. It leverages existing consensus practices and standards with existing automotive OEMs' and other organizations' test methods to address (1) Sample preparations, (2) Experiment conduction protocols, (3) Data analysis and evaluations based on unified objective measurable units for (i) intensity and (ii) discrimination with relevant statistical methods, to guide to a (4) comprehensive reporting methodology.

Harmonization of Test Methods to Measure VOCs from Polyurethane Foam Used in Automotive Interior Cabins

2020-05-20
WIP
J3233
The standard will describe a harmonized approach to measuring VOCs from polyurethane foam used in automotive seating. The standard will address the interests and requirements of OEMs and other stakeholders. It will leverage existing consensus standards with existing automotive OEM test methods to address the following: (1) Foam processing and handling, sample production, conditioning, packaging, storage, shipment, and specimen preparation, (2) Test methods to measure VOC Emissions, e.g. chambers, air sampling and analytical methods, (3) Data analysis and expression of results, (4) Description and flowchart of combined documents – Unification document, to form a comprehensive VOC roadmap.
