Ice Shape Test Matrix Development for Unprotected Surfaces
ARP6455
This document is intended to provide guidance for development of a test matrix for generation of ice shapes on unprotected surfaces. It introduces the reader to scaling of flight conditions to capabilities of typical icing tunnels and provides an example of the process.
Rationale: This document is intended to provide a recommended practice for novice users in development of a text matrix for creation of ice shapes on unprotected surfaces during testing in an icing wind tunnel. Consideration of a range of aspects including icing environment simulation, flight conditions to be tested, and size and icing condition scaling are discussed with resect to test planning. The document is intended to be an aid to the novice user in developing an icing test plan by referencing more detailed subjet sources and by providing an example of the test planning process. The document is also intended to provide assistance to the more experienced icing engineer by serving as a recommended checklist for creation of an icing test matrix.
