New Five-Speed Automatic Transmission for FWD Vehicles

2001-03-05
2001-01-0871
AISIN AW has developed a five-speed automatic transmission “55-50SN” for front wheel drive (FWD) vehicles. This new 55-50SN has been developed with a concept to minimize length and mass increase compared with the current four-speed automatic transmission, and is one of the most compact five-speed automatic transmissions in the world. This has been accomplished by newly developed planetary gear sets, a new differential, and a new squeezed torque converter. In addition, the control system is made by a unique design to maintain the excellent compactness and to achieve a high quality smooth shift feeling. This paper describes the construction, characteristic, and function of this five-speed automatic transmission.

Automatic Neutral Control - A New Fuel Saving Technology for Automatic Transmission

1996-02-01
960428
AISIN AW has developed a new fuel saving technology called the Automatic Neutral Control System which is installed in the 50-40LN automatic transmission. While idling with the brake applied, the system shifts the transmission into neutral by automatically releasing its forward clutch, so that the slipping loss of the torque converter is eliminated and less fuel is required to maintain the idling of the engine it shifts back to drive when the foot brake is released or the accelerator pedal is pressed. A folly integrated electro-hydraulic circuit and unique control principle were designed to provide very precise pressure to the forward clutch. As a result, we have confidence that a highly reliable system has been achieved with large improvements in fuel consumption.

To meet the 1990s' requirements for diesel engines, the realization of innovative fuel injection system has been expected. Thus the fuel injection system named ECD-U2 was newly developed. ECD-U2 is the electronic unit injector system with high pressure common rail of which features are explained as follows; Fully electronic and flexible control in fuel quantity and injection timing. Adjustable injection rate shape Optimum injection pressure control Superior packageability and low drive torque loss. In this paper, design strategies, actual hardware configurations and some test results of ECD-U2 are described.
