An advanced drive system for electric vehicles is described. The extremely compact and lightweight design features a high efficiency, high power density permanent magnet brushless dc motor with an integral gear reduction and differential. The electronic controller features full four quadrant operation with regeneration capable to zero speed.

The design and performance of an electric van with extended range capability is described. The vehicle platform is the Chrysler T115 minivan. A low emissions, alternate fueled (CNG, LP, methanol), internal combustion engine auxiliary power unit (3 - 5 kW) is employed for range extension. SAE J227 C-cycle performance of 100+ miles is attainable using low maintenance gelled electrolyte lead-acid batteries. A prototype has been built and is currently being evaluated. Also described is the design of an advanced drive system for the vehicle employing light weight, high efficiency permanent magnet motors and a hermetically sealed electric flywheel for increased acceleration capability and higher efficiency during regenerative braking.
