Dynamic testing of engines, transmissions and their components is now state-of-the-art for research and development and is increasingly common in endurance testing. This paper will describe application examples for R&D and endurance testing showing the advantages over steady state testing. One example describes a 24 hour, 2,500 km per day dynamic endurance test with vehicle simulation to test engine component reliability. Other examples shows gear shift simulations for manual and automatic transmission with emission analysis and engine management system connection for the testing of engine control strategies and add-on equipment. The dynamic test bed described here was developed at the author's company.
