Analysis of Con-Rod Big-End Bearing Lubrication on the Basis of Oil Supply Rate

The purpose of this study is to analyze con-rod bearing lubrication under reduced oil supply rate conditions. An engine was modified to measure the oil supply rate to a con-rod big-end bearing. Then the effects of the oil supply rate on bearing temperatures and the contact between a journal and a bearing were investigated in order to analyze lubrication characteristics. The bearing temperatures increased in accordance with reduced oil supply rate. On the other hand, the contact frequency hardly changed under almost all conditions, but steeply increased near one-third of the standard oil supply rate at the highest speed of 5000 rpm in the experiments. The results show that the reduced oil supply rate decreases the cooling effect but the hydrodynamic lubrication was sufficiently achieved except the above-mentioned severe condition.

Development of Two-Dimensional Oil Film Thickness Distribution Measuring System

A newly developed fluorescent diagnostic system can measure the oil film thickness distribution through two-dimensional images with high sensitivity and quick response. This system consists of a filtered Xe-flash lamp, a filtered charge-coupled-device video camera, a personal-computer-based signal analyzer and lubricating oil with the fluorescent dye added. We have installed the system in a single cylinder research engine and measured the oil film thickness distribution around the piston under various operating conditions. One example of the results is that an oil spout from a gap in the first compression ring, which agrees with the measured oil consumption rate of the engine, was clearly observed at high engine speed.

Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Model of Connecting Rod Big End Bearings; Comparison with Experiments by Diesel Engine

The EHD lubrication model of connecting rod big end bearings is compared with experiments using an automotive diesel engine. The axial load and the bending moment near the middle of rod length were derived from strain measurements and compared with the theoretical results based on engine dynamics. Although oscillation appeared on bending moment at 5000 rpm, the theoretical load almost agreed with the experiment. The EHD lubrication theory and the experiments were compared by the histories of clearances and the journal center orbits in the bearing. The theoretical results agreed well with the experimental one. The deformation of the bearing appeared both in the theory and in the experiment at 3000 rpm or above; these results confirm the necessity of the EHD lubrication theory.

Study of a Two-Degree-of-Freedom Exhaust System

An investigation was conducted into pressure pulsation in the exhaust port, which greatly affects volumetric efficiency and engine performance. From experiments using a single blow-down generator, it was established that the amplitude of the pressure pulsation increases as the manifold branch is lengthened and that large negative pressure synchronized with the timing of valve overlap can be obtained if a proper branch length is used. The performance of a 2ℓ test engine was optimized by varying the length of both the manifold branches and front pipe forks. It was found that whereas front pipe fork length affects engine performance over only a narrow range of engine speed, optimizing manifold branch length results in a considerable improvement over a wide engine speed range. In the course of optimizing the exhaust pipe manifold length of this two-degree-of-freedom exhaust system, abnormal exhaust noises were emitted at specific engine speeds during deceleration.

Measurements of Engine Torque with the Intra-Bearing Torque Sensor

A miniature noncontact torque sensor has been developed to be mounted on an engine for use in engine control systems. The sensor is installed in a last main bearing of the engine crankshaft. The principle is based on the measurement of torque-induced change in magnetic properties of a crankshaft due to the magneto-strictive effect. A new signal processing has also been developed. The method is very superior in linearity and stability of the output signal. Performance of the sensor examined on an engine-dynamometer arrangement is described.

Statistical Analysis of Pressure Indicator Data of an Internal Combustion Engine

A statistical indicator data analyzer has been developed, which is able to analyze various combustion characteristics such as rate of pressure increase, heat release rate, etc., from indicator data of four hundred (400) combustion cycles of each cylinder of a multicylinder engine. Statistical analyses on cycle-by-cycle variation of indicated mean effective pressure (imep) were made under various combinations of fuel systems and combustion chamber configurations to clarify those effects. The contribution of characteristics on the variation of imep was made clear to some extent.
