Power Magnetics Measurements, Modeling and Simulation

2002-10-29
2002-01-3208
Quick and accurate methods to plot B-H curves in EXCEL are described, which measure magnetic properties under any condition. Methods are shown that simulate gapped core inductors. This is an important method to bring electronic data from magnetic measurements and simplify performance analysis. Simple techniques of driving cores with sinusoidal waveforms to get voltage and current waveforms is all that is necessary to plot accurate B-H curves in EXCEL. Similar measurements can be used to measure incremental permeability. With this data, an accurate simulation model of a gapped core inductor can be made. With these techniques, the cores can be tested at any frequency and any temperature for accurate performance limit measurements

SSP Power Management and Distribution

2000-10-31
2000-01-3641
Space Solar Power is a NASA program sponsored by Marshall Space Flight Center. The Paper presented here represents the architectural study of a large power management and distribution (PMAD) system. The PMAD supplies power to a microwave array for power beaming to an earth rectenna (Rectifier Antenna). The power is in the GW level.

Sun Tower PMAD Architecture

1999-08-02
1999-01-2441
Sun Tower is a space based solar energy collection system designed to beam microwave energy to a energy collection antenna on the earth for further distribution to the power infrastructure. The proposed Sun Tower will require an efficient means for power transmission. This affects the Power Management And Distribution (PMAD) of the overall system and the individual PMAD elements distributed through the Sun Tower system architecture. As proposed, the Sun Tower would require a PMAD unit at each of the 340 arrays to generate the desired transmission voltage and subsequently down convert the required voltages of the planar microwave array. The power will be approximately 1.44GW/340 or 4.24MW per channel. To reduce the PMAD mass and size at the “bottom end” antenna array, a concept was developed using AC at approximately 10KHz. The use of AC will allow reduction in the bottom transformer size and simplify power processing.
