Opportunities, Challenges, and Requirements for Use of Blockchain in Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operating Below 400 Feet Above Ground Level for Commercial Use

2023-01-25
CURRENT
AIR7356
This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) focuses on opportunities, challenges, and requirements in use of blockchain for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) operating at and below 400 feet above ground level (AGL) for commercial use. UAS stakeholders like original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers, operators, owners, regulators, and maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) providers face many challenges in certification, airspace management, operations, supply chain, and maintenance. Blockchain—defined as a distributed ledger technology that includes enterprise blockchain—can help address some of these challenges. Blockchain technology is evolving and also poses certain concerns in adoption. This AIR provides information on the current UAS challenges and how these challenges can be addressed by deploying blockchain technology along with identified areas of concern when using this technology.

Determination of Cost Benefits from Implementing a Blockchain Solution

2021-08-19
CURRENT
ARP6984
This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) provides insights on how to perform a Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) to determine the Return on Investment (ROI) that would result from implementing a blockchain solution to a new or an existing business process. The word “blockchain” refers to a method of documenting when data transactions occur using a distributed ledger with desired immutable qualities. The scope of the current document is on enterprise blockchain which gives the benefit of standardized cryptography, legal enforceability and regulatory compliance. The document analyzes the complexity involved with this technology, lists some of the different approaches that can be used for conducting a CBA, and differentiates its analysis depending on whether the application uses a public or a private distributed network.

Electronic Transactions for Aerospace Systems: An Overview

2021-03-01
CURRENT
ARP6823
This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) offers an overview of the many key processes that are being transformed as the aerospace industry is rapidly digitalizing. The G-31 Electronic Transactions in Aerospace committee has been established to develop standards related to these processes. This report, also known as the “cornerstone” document for the committee, is a comprehensive look at processes associated with commercial aviation. Because of universal convergence of these technologies, the technologies described here are applicable to other domains as well.

Aircraft Asset Lifecycle and Digital Data Standards Overview

2020-09-18
CURRENT
AIR7501
This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) reviews technical, operational, and maintenance data being exchanged between key stakeholders in aerospace asset lifecycle and data standards available for such exchanges. It identifies gaps and non-availability of data standards in certain areas. The scope of the current document is limited to aircraft operations, maintenance and disposal stages post-build phase, and does not include the detailed interactions during the aircraft build phase.

Rationale, Considerations, and Framework for Data Interoperability for Health Management within the Aerospace Ecosystem

2020-04-21
CURRENT
AIR6904
This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) offers an overview of the aspects of intellectual property (IP) protection, legislative compliance, business model, and technologies which need to be considered and addressed to implement a data interoperability, secure business model and technology platform to enable prognostics and health management (PHM) in the digital age. While this information report is restricted to the aerospace domain and also to commercial aviation, the concepts are applicable to any other domain that employs data for supporting health management functionality.
