This paper was prepared to support supersession of MIL-S-8879C with Screw Thread Conformity Task Force selected industry standard AS8879C, published by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Other documentation changes will be covered by separate papers. Separate papers are anticipated for thread gaging issues, and thread gage calibration procedures. The STC-TF decided that the thread design standard needed to be completed before thread gage definition could be addressed. Thread gage definition has to be known before calibration procedures can be addressed.
This specification establishes the procedure for installing hardened key types studs and inserts, eliminating the need for broaching key slots. It also defines the hole preparation necessary to install the studs and inserts.
This procurement specification covers solid rivets and hollow end rivets made from a corrosion and heat resistant steel of the type identified under the unified numbering system as UNS S66286 and of 80 ksi single shear strength at room temperature.
This procurement specification covers tubular, blind rivets fabricated from a corrosion resistant nickel-copper alloy of the type identified under the Unified Numbering System as UNS N04405, and of 52 ksi minimum shear strength for self-plugging style rivets.
This procurement specification covers aircraft-quality solid rivets made from a corrosion resistant nickel-copper alloy of the type identified under the Unified Numbering System as UNS N04400 and of 46 ksi minimum shear strength.
This procurement specification covers inserts made from A286 alloy of the type identified under the Unified Numbering System as UNS S66286, solid film lubricated with a piastic self locking device, integrated locking keys to positively secure the insert against rotation when properly installed in threaded holes.
This specification establishes the requirements for self-locking wrenchable nuts with thread sizes 0.7500 thru 1.5000 inches. The nuts are made of corrosion and heat resistant precipitation hardenable iron base alloy of the type identified under the Unified Numbering System as UNS S66286 and of 160,000 psi axial tensile strength at room temperature, with maximum conditioning temperature of parts at 800 °F.
