Study of Simple Detection of Gasoline Fuel Contaminants Contributing to Increase Particulate Matter Emissions

The reduction of particulate emissions is one of the most important challenges facing the development of future gasoline engines. Several studies have demonstrated the impact of fuel chemical composition on the emissions of particulate matter, more particularly, the detrimental effect of high boiling point components such as heavy aromatics. Fuel contamination is likely to become a critical issue as new regulations such as Real Driving Emissions RDE involves the use of market fuel. The objective of this study is to investigate several experimental approaches to detect the presence of Diesel contamination in Gasoline which is likely to alter pollutant emissions. To achieve this, a fuel matrix composed of 12 fuels was built presenting diesel fuel in varying concentrations from 0.1 to 2% v/v. The fuel matrix was characterized using several original techniques developed in this study.

The Effect of Gasoline Metallic Additives on Low Speed Pre-Ignition

Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) is used as an octane-enhancing metallic additive for unleaded gasoline which can prevent engine knock by proactive reaction with the hydrocarbon free radicals before starting the auto-ignition of hydrocarbons. However it has been pointed out that MMT causes automotive catalysts clogging and spark plug severely fouling. Therefore, many countries have fuel standards that prohibit or limit the usage of MMT. Nevertheless, some countries still use MMT as there are no restrictions imposed by fuel standards. As mentioned in several papers, metallic additives of engine oil such as calcium cause an abnormal combustion phenomenon called low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) in turbocharged spark ignition engines. In contrast, the effect of metallic additives of gasoline such as MMT on LSPI has not been studied.

An Intake Valve Deposit (IVD) Engine Test Development to Investigate Deposit Build-Up Mechanism Using a Real Engine

In emerging markets, Port Fuel Injection (PFI) technology retains a higher market share than Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) technology. In these markets fuel quality remains a concern even despite an overall improvement in quality. Typical PFI engines are sensitive to fuel quality regardless of brand, engine architecture, or cylinder configuration. One of the well-known impacts of fuel quality on PFI engines is the formation of Intake Valve Deposits (IVD). These deposits steadily accumulate over time and can lead to a deterioration of engine performance. IVD formation mechanisms have been characterized in previous studies. However, no test is available on a state-of-the-art engine to study the impact of fuel components on IVD formation. Therefore, a proprietary engine test was developed to test several chemistries. Sixteen fuel blends were tested. The deposit formation mechanism has been studied and analysed.

Prediction Method for Automobile EMI Test Result in AM Frequency Band

The EMI, electromagnetic interference, is tested for automobiles and components by the method defined in the international standard, CISPR 25. Regarding the automobile test, the EMI from the component installed in the automobile is measured by the antenna of an automobile. On the other hand on the component test, the EMI from the component is measured by a mono-pole antenna set forward of the component. However, components sometimes fail the automobile test even if its passed the component test due to the difference of the method. In this case, the component has to be designed again to pass the automobile test. Therefore, the prediction method of the automobile test result is required. In this paper, we tried to modify the standard component test configuration to predict the automobile test result for a fuel pump system in AM frequency band.

Development of Gasoline Injector Cleaner for Port Fuel Injection and Direct Injection

Port fuel injection (PFI) injector and direct fuel injection (DI) injector clogging from deposits caused by poor fuel quality, is a concern in emerging countries. Then DI injector deposits are sometimes cleaned by injector cleaners in such situation. However deposit cleaners for PFI injectors have not been developed, because of the lack of research of PFI injector deposits. Through chemical analysis, this study showed them to be water-soluble deposits. Subsequently success was achieved in developing a new gasoline injector cleaner applicable to injector deposits in both types of injectors, through optimization of a surface active agent.

Flame Propagation Characteristics of Premixed Hydrocarbon Fuels at Elevated Pressures

For recent high efficiency engine with high compression ratio and highly boosted technology, combustion occurs at resultant more elevated pressure condition, as compared to conventional engine, which is known to decrease laminar burning velocity and cause flame instability. Flame instability could play an important role in combustion performance, and so far many theoretical and experimental studies have been devoted to the relevant matters. In this study, effects of flame instabilities on the combustion properties, such as the topography of flame surface and the variation in flame speed, have been experimentally examined using a dual constant volume combustion chamber in consideration of elevated pressure combustion in state-of-art IC engine.

Analysis of Degradation Mechanism of Lead-Free Materials

The use of lead-free (Pb-free) solder and plating in onboard electronic components has accelerated rapidly in recent years, but solutions have yet to be found for the issues of whisker generation in tin (Sn) plating and crack initiation in Pb-free solder, despite widespread research efforts. Analysis of the whisker generation mechanism has focused on internal energy levels and crystal orientation, and analysis of the crack initiation mechanism in Pb-free solder has examined changes in the grain boundaries of Sn crystals.
