2006-04-03
2006-01-1305
AISIN AW has developed a new Continuously Variable Transmission (hereafter CVT) with torque converter for small capacity engines. The target vehicles are B class cars. The following items are the concept of the development. - Compact size to be applicable to small cars in Japan (K-car). - The lightest in the world. - Low noise level in addition to improved fuel consumption. The CVT introduces neutral-control logic and a long-travel damper on the torque converter for expansion of the lock-up area.

AISIN AW has developed a new transmission control module (hereinafter referred to as “TCM”), which can be applied to the world wide FWD 6-speed automatic transmission (hereinafter referred to as “A/T”). This newly developed TCM can contribute to the whole vehicle system as it is integrated to mechanical A/T in the meaning of ‘hardware’, and completed and ensured the functions in the A/T system. This TCM allows us to greatly reduce the number of the wire harness and the connector, and the space for installing TCM, which are required for the conventional style: A/T and TCM are separately installed, so that it can contribute to fuel economy, weight saving, utilization of the space in the engine room and cost reduction. Our Integrated TCM on A/T integrates the functions with the conventional neutral safety switch (hereinafter referred to as “N.S.S/W”) for detecting shift position, so that it allows compact installation to the limited space on A/T.

AISIN AW has developed a new FWD 6-speed automatic transmission “TF-80SC” for luxury cars with high torque engines. This newly developed automatic transmission (A/T) is based on the concept of the FWD 6-speed A/T “TF-60SN” that we have already introduced to the world market. The basic concept for the 6-speed A/T is to achieve weight saving and compact as well as better fuel efficiency and driving performance in comparison with conventional 5-speed A/Ts. Of course the shift feel must be the top level in the world, so we increased torque capacity of the TF-80SC to cover luxury cars with high torque engine. One of the outstanding features of the A/T is an advanced band brake that allows simultaneous pursuits of high capacity, weight saving, size reduction and high efficiency as well as high-quality shift feeling qualified for luxury cars. This paper describes the advantages and structure of the new A/T with a focus on our approach to new technology of the band brake system.

AISIN AW has developed a new full hybrid transmission, the HD-10 for front wheel drive vehicles. This HD-10 has been developed based on the concept for improving fuel economy and performance without sacrificing drivability and utility. To achieve this, the transmission adopts an integrated design, which consists of two electric motors, gears including a planetary gear set, two inverters, and an electronic control unit. In addition, new software has been developed to offer smooth operation in every drive condition.

AISIN AW has developed a six-speed automatic transmission TF-60SN for front wheel drive (FWD) vehicles. This new TF-60SN has been developed based on the concepts of minimizing length and mass increase as compared with current five-speed automatic transmissions, and providing the world's first transverse FWD six-speed automatic transmission. This has been accomplished using a newly developed planetary gear set, and a new “squeezed” torque converter. In addition, the control system features a unique design that maintains outstanding compactness and achieves a high quality smooth shift feeling. This paper describes the construction, characteristics, and functions of this six-speed automatic transmission.

AISIN AW has developed a new six-speed automatic transmission TR-60SN for rear wheel drive (RWD) vehicles, for use in sports utility vehicles with high torque engines. This new TR-60SN has been developed based on the concept of improving fuel consumption and drivability while minimizing the number of component parts, and covering engine torque of 10 or 12 cylinders. To achieve this, TR-60SN utilizes component parts including gear train, torque converter, oil pump, and casing that have a completely new design. In addition, a new electric-hydraulic control unit has also been developed that offers both world class shift quality and a sporty shift feeling.

Automatic Neutral Control - A New Fuel Saving Technology for Automatic Transmission

1996-02-01

AISIN AW has developed a new fuel saving technology called the Automatic Neutral Control System which is installed in the 50-40LN automatic transmission. While idling with the brake applied, the system shifts the transmission into neutral by automatically releasing its forward clutch, so that the slipping loss of the torque converter is eliminated and less fuel is required to maintain the idling of the engine it shifts back to drive when the foot brake is released or the accelerator pedal is pressed. A folly integrated electro-hydraulic circuit and unique control principle were designed to provide very precise pressure to the forward clutch. As a result, we have confidence that a highly reliable system has been achieved with large improvements in fuel consumption.

Toyota has developed a new full time 4WD system, called “EC-HYMATIC” or Electronically Controlled - HYdraulic Multi-plate clutch Active Traction Intelligent Control. This system permits an automatic torque transfer, depending on driving conditions, for front and rear wheels under control of the speed difference between the two. The system developed consists of a center differential, a speed difference control clutch system employing multi-plate clutch, and a gear set for rear axle drive. The speed difference control clutch system is controlled by a unique electro-hydraulic system using a microcomputer. An extensive use of computer simulations and vehicle test and evaluation has successfully developed an appropriate control strategy for the clutch system. The new 4WD system, EC-HYMATIC, considerably improves handling characteristics, traction performance and stability of a 4WD vehicle.

As the computer control concept develops, its application has potential answers to better fuel economy requirements in the automotive industry. Under overall programs to upgrade the total vehicle performance, Toyota has been developing automatic transmissions systematically. A new automatic transmission employing a microcomputer was introduced for better economy and driveability. The microcomputer controls shift and lock-up clutch operating schedules. The transmission ensures mechanical coupling from the low gear for high efficiency while maintaining superior shift quality with the lock-up clutch control during shift transition. It also offers shift pattern selection for various driving conditions and driver’s preference.
