Reduction of Friction Losses in Crankcase at High Engine Speeds

Recently, engines achieving high power levels are becoming increasingly common. The trend is toward increasing the inflow of lubricating oil into the crankcase through several factors (for example, increasing the flow rate of the cooling oil jets in order to reduce the thermal load of the pistons). In addition, the mechanical losses induced by the motion of the crankshaft and connecting rods through the additional oil are intensified due to the higher engine speeds at maximum power. In this article, we confirmed a method of separating the pumping loss and the agitation loss by measuring the pressure in the crankcase and an empirical formula was found for predicting pumping loss from displacement and ventilating area. We also investigated the effect of reducing the lubrication oil flow rate, as well as other factors affecting the oil flow, on the mechanical loss at high engine speeds.

Analysis of Oil Consumption at High Engine Speed by Visualization of the Piston Ring Behaviors

In internal combustion engine, it is well-known that oil infiltrates the combustion chamber through the clearance between the piston ring and the cylinder bore with vertical reciprocating motion of the piston, leading to an increase in oil consumption. The deformation of the cylinder bore is inevitable to some extent in the actual engine because of the tightening of cylinder head bolt and heat load._As to the function of the piston ring, it is desirable that it conforms to such bore deformation. The author et al. made a glass cylinder engine in which closed piston ring gap could be visualized, based on the idea that piston ring conformability to the sliding surface of bore could be evaluated from minute changes of the piston ring gap. This newly-devised visualized engine was an in-line 4-cylinder engine, capable of running up to 6,000 rpm, in which the closed gap of piston ring could be observed minutely during engine operation.

Measurement of Rate of Multiple-Injection in CDI Diesel Engines

The injection rate meter based on W. Zeuch's method was improved to meet the recent requirement for precise measurement of the multiple injection rate and amount in CDI (Common rail Direct Injection) diesel engines. A pressure sensor with a high sensitivity was added to measure the small pressure increase due to the pilot injection and after injection. At the same time a flow meter having a high accuracy was installed in the discharge pipe line to obtain a correction factor to the modulus of elasticity of volume. As a result it became possible to measure the multiple injection amount at an accuracy of ±0.2mm3/stroke in a range up to 40mm3/stroke.

Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Dispersion of Fuel Droplets in an Unsteady Spray via Discrete Vortex Method

The turbulent dispersion of particles in an unsteady two dimensional particle-laden jet was simulated by a discrete vortex method coupling with a model of gas/particles interaction. Numerical analysis of a spray yielded the distributions of vorticity, fuel mass concentration and local Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of droplets in a spray. The predicted distribution of local SMD of droplets in a spray demonstrated that the size of droplets in the spray periphery is larger than that of droplets in the center region of spray. This trend of distribution of drop size coincided with that of measured one. The predicted distributions of drop size and vorticity revealed that the larger droplets are easily centrifuged to the periphery of the spray. The effects of the pattern of injection rate on the mixing process in a transient spray were also investigated.
