Numerical Investigation of Knocking in a Small Two-Stroke Engine with a High Compression Ration to Improve Thermal Efficiency

This study aimed to achieve both a high compression ratio and low knock intensity in a two-stroke engine. Previous research has suggested that knock intensity can be reduced by combining combustion chamber geometry and scavenging passaging design for the same engine specifications with a compression ratio of 13.7. In this report, we investigate whether low knock intensity can be achieved at compression ratios of 14.4 and 16.8 by adjusting the combustion chamber geometry and scavenging passage design. As a result, the mechanism by which combustion chamber geometry and scavenging passage design change knock intensity was clarified.

Development of 1.5L Diesel Engine for Stage V with common rail system

Recently, EU StageV emissions regulations have been enforced in the European market since 2019, increasing environmental requirements for diesel engines. EU StageV has been tightened compared to EPA Tier4 regulation, which demand PM (Particulate Matter) reduction and added new PN (Particle Number) regulations. Until the previous regulation EU Stage IIIA, the power category of 19kW or more and less than 37 kW had adopted mechanical IDI (Indirect-Injection). This mechanical engine is characterized by compactness and lightweight because of simple structure. Therefore, this engine is appreciated by customer with easy installation. On the other hand, to achieve EU StageV, it is necessary to adopt the electronic direct injection common rail system with more precise fuel injection and advanced exhaust gas aftertreatment device.

Study on Fuel-Saving Durability of Ultra-Low Viscosity 0W-8 Gasoline Engine Oil

The JASO GLV-1 standard was introduced in Japan for 0W-8 ultra-low viscosity gasoline engine oil to improve fuel economy. Fuel economy targets are specified for new oil but not for aged oil. In contrast, Sequence VI in the ILSAC GF-6 standard requires fuel economy improvement for both new and aged oils. This test simulates fuel economy improvement after 6400 km (FEI 1) and 16000 km (FEI 2) of driving based on US fuel economy certification testing. Currently, 0W-8 is not included in the ILSAC standard and the fuel-saving durability of 0W-8 has not been investigated. To include ultra-low viscosity oil like 0W-8 in future engine oil standards, it is necessary to know its fuel-saving durability and to examine the evaluation test method. This study focused on the fuel-saving durability of 0W-8 with or without the Mo friction modifier and considered the evaluation method.

Development of 2-Cylinder Diesel Engine for European Quadricycle in Compliance with EURO4

The EURO4 standard has been enforced since the year 2017 for European quadricycle. The vehicles are regulated upper limit of unladen weight and engine displacement, in addition to the exhaust emissions and the net power. In order to meet those regulations, the engine for European quadricycle is demanded low exhaust emissions and light weight. Further, it is required to be achieved good drivability, low fuel consumption, low noise and more compact. We introduce technologies to meet demand for European quadricycle in compliance with EURO4. The limit values of exhaust emissions have been strengthened in EURO4 standard compared to the previous one. As devices to improve the exhaust emissions, the exhaust-after-treatment devices and the common rail injection system are well known, whereas those devices make engine systems heavier. In addition, to satisfy high torque at low speed for better drivability, larger displacement is effective.

Impacts on Engine Oil Performance by the Use of Waste Cooking Oil as Diesel Fuel

Technical impacts on engine oil performance by the use of waste cooking oil as bio-diesel fuel (BDF) are not well understood while the industry has made significant progress in studies on quality specifications and infrastructure. The authors, who consist of a consortium organized by Japan Lubricating Oil Society (JALOS), examined technical effects of waste cooking oil as BDF on engine oil performance such as wear and high temperature corrosion using vehicle fleets and bench tests to identify technical issues of engine oil meeting the use of BDF. The study brings fundamental information about technical impacts of BDF on engine oils.
