Development of Rare Earth-saving Magnet Using Localized Diffusion Method

Nd₂Fe₁₄B sintered magnets are used in the drive motors of hybrid, electric and other vehicles. A magnet in which rare earth content is reduced by means of a localized diffusion method has been developed in order to reduce the volume of dysprosium. The distribution of the demagnetization fields in a motor is not uniform, so the necessary coercivity distribution for the magnets was quantified using Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE). Then material specifications of the localized dysprosium diffusion satisfied with this coercivity distribution was determined, and optimal manufacturing conditions including the position of dysprosium diffusion were set. The coercivity distribution in every position of the magnet using localized diffusion method was inspected. As a result, the magnet was satisfied with coercivity distribution demanded by CAE.

Technologies related to electrical systems for the 2011 hybrid model have been developed. In order to increase energy recovery during driving, improvements were made compared to the 2006 model in terms of motor output increase and high-efficiency range expansion. In consideration of vehicle control associated with the use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) as well as reliability, a system to control effective use of battery performance was developed which involves detection of battery conditions. Control of energy management was optimized compared to nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries through the use of higher-output LIBs and a high-output motor.

Development and Practicing of Automatic Fluorescent Magnetic Particles Inspection

The fluorescent magnetic particle inspection is widely used as a visual inspection method for checking cracks generated in hardening and grinding of induction-hardened parts. However, automation of this inspection process has strongly been demanded, due to poor environmental conditions and production line speed. To satisfy such a demand, we have developed a method for picking up images of automotive parts with higher S/N ratio and an original algorithm for image processing which helps measure cracks accurately without being affected by the illuminance and magnetic particle solution concentration. Then we selected the front axle shaft as the object to study practical use and have solved various technical problems in actual use, thereby succeeding in actual application to our production lines.
