Exterior Lighting Use During the Park Condition of a Motor Vehicle
J3283
This SAE Recommended Practice provides installation requirements, design guidelines, and performance requirements for vehicle exterior lighting used during the park condition of a motor vehicle.
Rationale: The subject of vehicle exterior lighting welcome and departure animation was a discussion topic during the June 30, 2021 SAE Lighting Systems Group task force meetings. This discussion included reviewing video examples of the welcome and departure animation feature installed on various production vehicles. The discussion also included the review of applicable legislation in force or under consideration in several regions of the world.
At the end of this discussion, it was agreed the SAE Lighting Systems Group would form a new “Vehicle Exterior Lighting Welcome and Departure Animation Task Force” to study this subject with the intent of providing a vehicle exterior lighting industry consensus recommended practice for this feature for North American market vehicles.
At the December 2021 meeting of this task force, it was discussed that several future battery electric vehicles already revealed to the public plan to use exterior lighting while parked to indicate the vehicle is in the state of being charged and/or to indicate the state of charge of the battery (e.g., half charge, full charge). This task force started with the assumption that exterior lighting welcome and departure animation would also operate only during the park condition of the vehicle. It was suggested this task force change its focus to address various exterior lighting devices that may be used during the park condition of the vehicle. These devices may include exterior lighting welcome and departure animation, illumination used to assist users during ingress/egress of the vehicle, and battery charge indication lighting for battery electric vehicles.
