This document is intended to provide a means of identification of Powered Micromobility Vehicle classes and characteristics through use of an alpha-numeric identifier. This document will apply primarily to the device classes identified in SAE J3194™. It provides a schema for utilizing alpha-numeric values to represent the manufacturer, year of manufacture, model, device type, weight, width, speed, power, and production number. It also addresses location for placement of these identifiers on the device, type of label, permanence, and visibility.
Rationale: This document is intended to support consistent and accurate identification of these devices to promote uniformity and comparability in safety data. This standard would differentiate the classes and any sub-classes (e.g., powered bicycle classes). The schema presented in this standard utilizes the long-established Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) assigned by motor vehicle manufacturers as a model. A similar method has been used by manufacturers of off-road recreation vehicles to assign an alpha-numeric Product Identification Number (PIN) to facilitate standard identification. In design this schema has been developed to align with existing voluntary standards and known manufacturer practices.
