Hydraulic Brake Hose Assemblies for use with Nonpetroleum-Base Hydarlic Fluids in Non-ounce Applications
J3090
This SAE Standard specifies the performance tests and requirements for hydraulic brake hose assemblies used in the underhood hydraulic braking system of a road vehicle. This standard does NOT apply to brake hose used in jounce applications (wheel mounted brake hose assemblies). It also specifies the methods used for identification of the hose manufacturer.
This document applies to brake hose assemblies made of a hose permanently attached (crimped, swaged, etc) fabricated from yarn and natural or synthetic elastomers and assembled with metal end fittings for use with nonpetroleum-base brake fluids as specified in SAE J1703, SAE J1704 and SAE J1705. If the possibility of abrasion to neighboring vehicular components is a significant issue, the system designer should consider adding a sleeve/armor to cover the hose or a bracket to control the possible contact, and abrasion testing per ISO 6945 should be considered. If a sleeve to cover the hose is specified and if there exists a possibility of exposure to battery acid, the system designer should ensure that the sleeve is made of acid resistant materials.
Rationale: This standard has been written to address requirements specific to brake hose assemblies used in non-jounce (underhood) applications, including hose dimensions and performance parameters which are not currently part of SAE J1401 Hydraulic Brake Hose Assembly Standard.
Included herein:
• Volumetric expansion testing at elevated temperatures and lower pressures, to insure system compliance under conditions of the underhood environment.
• An alternative volumetric expansion test method based on volume uptake for better simulation of actual brake response.
• Higher burst pressure limits based on maximum system pressures, including a safety factor.
• Ozone exposure conditions reflecting CARB guidelines.
• Extended salt spray testing to address higher vehicle corrosion requirements.
• Additional performance testing including Moisture Ingression, Heat Age/Cold Bend, Pressure/Temperature Cycling, Underhood Fluid Resistance, Kink Resistance, and Cleanliness.
