Heavy Duty Lamp Electrical Connector Standard
J2577_200809
This SAE Standard encompasses connectors that form the electrical interface(s) between the heavy duty lighting device(s) and the truck and truck/trailer wiring harness system. This document provides design and performance requirements based upon the mechanical, electrical and environmental conditions and covers applications of connectors for direct current electrical systems of 24 V nominal or less in heavy-duty signaling and marking devices. This standard excludes forward lighting devices (i.e. fog lamps) but includes the following list of lamps:
Rationale:
Our current SAE J2577 document calls for a performance metric of a weathering requirement (UV and Moisture) under paragraph 6.17. This requirement is to meet the definitions under ASTM G 154 (Fluorescent Light UV Exposure). The acceptance criteria under paragraph 7.17 calls for material certifications or testing.
Various plastic suppliers indicated that the test methods they’ve used for those plastics UV rated was per UL746 (which references back to ASTM G 155 – Xenon Arc Lamp UV Exposure).
In reading the ASTM G 154 standard and ASTM G 155, these standards are written as generalizations and the acceptance criteria are left up to the users.
Paragraph 6.17 has been modified to allow either the original test procedure or ASTM G 155. Likewise the requirements have been modified to define the failure mode.
