Development of Procurement Specification for Helical Thread Inserts using UNS S21800 (Nitronic 60) Material

This document aims to define the procurement requirements for helical coil threaded inserts manufactured from corrosion-resistant steel formed wire, with the chemical composition aligning with UNS S21800. It will enable insert manufacturers to adhere to specific standards to meet the criteria outlined in this procurement specification.
Rationale: The current material specification for helical coils, CRES - TYPE 304 Per AS7245, has shown limitations in terms of galling resistance, particularly when used alongside A286 and Inconel 718 fasteners. As an alternative, UNS S21800, validated by AMS5848 or ASTM A276, or as per ASTM A240/A240M (UNS S21800), has demonstrated exceptional resistance to galling, making it a superior choice for addressing prevalent industry challenges.
