Counterfeit and Substandard Battery Risk Mitigation

The Counterfeit and Substandard Battery Risk Mitigation sub-committee, G21B, is proposed with the goal of addressing the significant risk presented by counterfeit and substandard batteries. A standard similar to the SAE AS6171 Anti-counterfeit standard will provide inspection methods and risk mitigation strategies, to help mitigate the risk for the Aerospace and Defense industries, to the benefit of all.
Rationale: Counterfeit and substandard batteries have increasingly affected both the Federal and Private sectors including the U.S. Department of Defense, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and international Corporations. Whether deliberately counterfeited and/or represented as something they are not (new, unused, of a particular brand or type, etc.), falsely certified (standards, testing, data), the output of unauthorized production (untested, not evaluated through quality control), from obsolete inventory sales or substandard production methods, counterfeit and substandard batteries present a significant risk to the users of the systems they’re installed in. Consequences range from the system/device/platform not working, injury and risk of death to the user, high-profile failures, and legal consequences, including significant damage to brand reputation, customer confidence, and public opinion. Currently, there is no standard analogous to the SAE AS6171 Anti-counterfeit standard, to guide Private and Federal organizations in addressing the significant threats presented by counterfeit and substandard batteries. This sub-committee seeks to address the gap in order to help mitigate the risk for the Aerospace and Defense industries, to the benefit of all.
