Isolation failure development in high voltage battery systems
AIR7146
This document discusses isolation failures in high voltage battery systems in testing and service, conditions that may lead to the development of those failures, and successful methods of mitigation.
Rationale: High voltage DC battery systems present long-term electrical hazards different from those in AC systems. The continual exposure to DC electric fields has been shown to lead to a material-dependent gradual loss in electrical isolation through several mechanisms, which has led to fires in production battery systems. This paper describes those mechanisms and how to avoid them.
