Effect of Turbulent Fuel-Air Mixing on Spray Flame Characteristics

Effect of the turbulent mixing upon the spray flame characteristics has been investigated experimentally. Simple control of turbulence was realized by means of the grids of different mesh size, placed in front of the nozzle. The results show that insertion of a grid of sufficiently fine mesh enhances vaporization of the fuel. Since the size distribution measurement shows only small change with the change of a mesh size, the effect of faster vaporization can be considered to be caused by the decrease in local particle number density rather than by the increase of individual droplet evaporation rates. Surprisingly, faster vaporization results in flame length growth.
