Development of CFD Method for Spray Shape Estimation

Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) is widely used to develop engine combustion. Especially the in-cylinder spray calculation is important in order to resolve the issues of direct injection gasoline engines (e.g., particulate matter (PM) and oil dilution caused by fuel wetting on the cylinder walls). Conventional spray calculation methods require fitting based on measurements of spray characteristics such as penetration and droplet diameter (i.e., the Sauter mean diameter (SMD)). Particularly in the case of slit nozzle shapes that widen from the inlet to the outlet to form a fan-shaped spray, fitting the shape of spray is a complex procedure because the flow inside the nozzle is not uniform. In response, a new calculation method has been developed that eliminates the need for spray shape fitting by combining calculations of the Eulerian multiphase and the Lagrangian multiphase.

New Combustion Concept for Turbocharged Gasoline Direct-Injection Engines

The advantages of gasoline direct-injection are intake air cooling due to fuel vaporization which reduces knocking, additional degrees of freedom in designing a stratified injection mixture, and capability for retarded ignition timing which shortens catalyst light-off time. Stratified mixture combustion designs often require complicated piston shapes which disturb the fluid flow in the cylinder, leading to power reduction, especially in turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engines. Our research replaced the conventional shell-type shallow cavity piston with a dog dish-type curved piston that includes a small lip to facilitate stratification and minimize flow disturbance. As a result, stable stratified combustion and increased power were both achieved.

Development of In-cylinder Mixture and Flame Propagation Distribution Measurement Device with Spark Plug Type Sensor

A new method to measure in-cylinder flame propagation and mixture distribution has been developed. The distribution is derived from analyzing the temporal history of flame spectra of CH* and C2*, which are detected by a spark plug type sensor with multi-optical fibers. The validity of this method was confirmed by verifying that the measurement results corresponded with the results of high speed flame visualization and laser induced fluorescence (LIF) measurement. This method was also applied to analysis of cyclic combustion fluctuation on start-up in a direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine, and its applicability was confirmed.

Development of Combustion Behavior Analysis Techniques in the Ultra High Engine Speed Range

In order to clarify the combustion behavior in the ultra high engine speed range, a new technique has been developed. This technique is composed of ionization current detection and flame observation, and is highly heat-resistant, vibration-resistant, and has a quick response. From analyzing the flame front propagation in the high-speed research engine, it was found that the flame propagated throughout the entire cylinder over almost the same crank angle period irrespective of engine speed introduction.

Effects of High Turbulence Flow on Knock Characteristics

In enhancing the performance of automotive internal combustion engines, increasing the compression ratio offers an effective means of improving engine thermal efficiency. If the compression ratio is increased, however, the problem of knock occurs in exchange for improvement in engine thermal efficiency. In other words, an increase in compression ratio causes in-cylinder compressive end gas temperature to rise, resulting in the occurrence of knock. This in turn requires ignition timing retard to combat the knock. This trade-off makes it difficult to achieve the theoretical maximum combustion efficiency. In this paper, we clarify the feasibility of suppressing the occurrence of knock by increasing the burn rate. Specifically, we increase the burn rate by injecting high-pressure air directly into the combustion chamber, causing highly turbulent in-cylinder flow.

Analysis of EGR Cyclic Variations in a Direct Injection Gasoline Engine by Using Raman Scattering Method

The Raman scattering method has been developed for the simultaneous, cycle by cycle measurement of HC, O2, H2O, and N2 in a direct injection gasoline engine with EGR. By using the Raman scattering method, the effect of EGR on stratified charge combustion can be investigated in a direct injection SI gasoline engine. The results show that (1) at the compression stroke homogeneous EGR gas exists, (2) variation of component mass fraction of EGR (qualitative fluctuation) introduced in the previous combustion cycle is the primary reason for EGR fluctuation, (3) under normal operating conditions, EGR fluctuation (component mass fraction and quantitative fluctuation) doesn't influence on the combustion fluctuation at the stratified charge operation.

Measurement of Air-Fuel Mixture Distribution in a Gasoline Engine Using LIEF Technique

The laser-induced exciplex fluorescence (LIEF) technique, currently used to observe mixture formation in a diesel engine, has been applied to a spark ignition (SI) engine and a new equivalence ratio calibration technique has been developed in order that two-dimensional measurements of the equivalence ratio may be made in an operating engine. Spectrally separated fluorescent images of liquid and vapor phase fuel distributions were obtained by adding new exciplex-forming dopants to the gasoline fuel. Dual light sheets from an excimer laser were introduced into one of the cylinders of a 4-valve lean-burn engine, and 2-D images of the mixture formation were recorded at pre-set crank angles during the induction and compression strokes by an image-intensified camera equipped with the appropriate filter.

Development of Air-Assisted Injector System

In order to realize higher response and lower emissions for 4-valve engines, TOYOTA has researched ways to homogenize the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber as well as to reduce intake port wall-wetting. To achieve these items we have developed an air-assisted type two-hole injector (air-assisted injector) system which has improved both fuel atomization and spray directions. This system has been introduced to a 3Liter V-6 passenger car engine and mass produced. The air-assisted injector atomizes the fuel by causing the air to collide and mix with the fuel. In order to obtain the air needed for atomization under all driving conditions, including idling, a new type idling speed control valve (ISCV) which has two air outlet passages has been developed. By means of this new ISCV, the new air-assisted injector system improves both fuel atomization and engine idling speed control during cold and hot engine conditions.
