General Motors Powertrain Group (GMPTG) has developed an all new small block V8 engine, designated LS1, for introduction into the 1997 Corvette. This engine was designed to meet both customer requirements and competitive challenges while also meeting the ever increasing legislated requirements of emissions and fuel economy. This 5.7L V8 provides increased power and torque while delivering higher fuel economy. In addition, improvements in both QRD and NVH characteristics were made while meeting packaging constraints and achieving significant mass reductions.

The Electronically Controlled 6.5L Diesel Engine

For model year 1994, General Motors has completed the roll out of the 6.5L Diesel Engine, with the introduction of the light duty certified naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines. At the heart of the expanded use of the 6.5L is a new electronic powertrain control system. The objectives for this system were to produce an engine that has less variation, is easier to assemble, low cost and capable of meeting both heavy and light duty future emissions requirements. Control features include Fuel Quantity and Timing, EGR, Wastegate, Glow Plugs, Transmission, Cruise Control and Diagnostics.

A Dynamic Simulation of the Detroit Diesel Electronic Control System in Heavy Duty Truck Powertrains

A comprehensive simulation has been developed which describes the dynamic behavior of truck powertrains employing. Detroit Diesel Allison heavy duty diesel engines equipped with the Detroit Diesel Electronic Control System (DDEC). The simulation, was developed to address those issues related to DDEC fuel control that impact upon engine smoke production and upon vehicle driveability and responsiveness, and to identify components in the powertrain which interact with the control system. The simulation contains four major submodels: (1) torque and transient air system model of the 8V-92 turbocharged/inter-cooled two-stroke engine; (2) discrete event, DDEC controller/governor model; (3) tandem rear axle drive, torsionally compliant, manual transmission driveline model; and (4) flexible driver simulator and external event module.
