Development of an Integrated Environmental Control System 981544

An integrated Environmental Control System (ECS) and Thermal Management System (TMS) is under development for the F-22 fighter aircraft. The unique nature of the F-22 ECS/TMS forced a move away from traditional methods of ECS and thermal system development.
Unique features of the F-22 ECS/TMS include extensive use of fuel as a heat sink, digital control, and complex and dynamic interactions with other aircraft systems. This paper highlights some of the challenges, achievements, and lessons learned in the F-22 ECS/TMS development process. A brief system description is also provided.
