Smart Structures: Sensing Technologies for Structural Health Monitoring 981508

This paper gives an overview of two sensing technologies employed by smart structures for structural health monitoring: piezoelectric sensors and fiber optic sensors. For each sensing technology, the basic operating principles are explained, the main types of sensors are classified, characteristic properties are listed, and structural health monitoring examples are given. The paper concludes comparing these technologies in the context of structural health monitoring with the widely used strain gauges.
