A discussion of the use of tape technologies that can replace paint on aircraft and be used as an aircraft surface protection layer to help prevent or minimize erosion, corrosion, and abrasion damage. A review of the performance parameters required of the aerospace market and some of the economic and environmental incentives for using tape technologies to provide aircraft livery and surface protection. A systems overview discussing the issues relating to the product design features and characteristics, application, non-destructive testing and inspection, and removal techniques of tape systems. Demonstrated private, commercial and military aerospace examples of the use of tape technology that can improve aircraft longevity, reduce maintenance time and cost, and improve performance. Unclassified discussion of the use of tape technology as an alternative coating for drag reduction, paint replacement, and signature control. Review of certain 3M Aerospace's activities with Airbus, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and the National Institute of Standards & Technology Advanced Technology Program.
