New Conical Air Induction Systems 950229

A new conical air induction system (AIS) has been developed and is currently in use on two new passenger car platforms and one new truck platform.
Design features of the conical AIS permit integration of various components and functions for the engine:
  • Dust filtration
  • Mass Air Flow Sensing (MAFS)
  • Air Charge Temperature (ACT) Sensing
  • Noise Attenuation (NVH)
There are three generic sizes of conical AIS's. Each generic conical is designed for a specific set of performance criteria.
Design and development performance data has been obtained from three current production powertrains equipped with conical AIS's.
Both the advantages and disadvantages of conical type AIS's when compared to traditional panel type AIS's are described in the body of this report.
