Development of JASO 2-Stroke Engine Oil Standards 931938

The 2-Stroke Engine Oil Subcommittee of the JSAE has developed the following five JASO (Japan Automobile Standards Organization) 2-Stroke Gasoline Engine Oil Quality Standards for motorcycle, utility and outboard engines:
  1. 1)
JASO M340-92 Lubricity test procedure for evaluating two stroke gasoline engine oils
  2. 2)
JASO M341-92 Detergency test procedure for evaluating two stroke gasoline engine oils
  3. 3)
JASO M342-92 Smoke test procedure for evaluating two stroke gasoline engine oils
  4. 4)
JASO M343-92 Exhaust system blocking test procedure for evaluating two stroke gasoline engine oils
  5. 5)
JASO M345-93 Two stroke gasoline engine oils
These standards consist of four kinds of engine test procedure and a classification system which includes three physico chemical properties of an oil.
The concept of the standards are summarized as follows:
  1. 1)
The standards should be established based on a realistic data base.
  2. 2)
A classification system based on performance levels should be adopted for the standard.
  3. 3)
The standards should be beneficial for consumers.
They should be helpful for consumers to select the proper 2-stroke gasoline engine oil (hereinafter referred to as “2T oil”) and should also contribute to improving the quality of 2T oils in the market.
They have been developed in cooperation with the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and the CEC (Coordinating European Council).
It is to be hoped that this will be the first important step for establishing 2T Oil ISO Standards in the near future by cooperation with the PAJ (Petroleum Association of Japan), ASTM and CEC.
