Use of Sintered Alpha Silicon Carbide in Automotive Water Pumps 921477

Increased leakage problems in automotive and truck engine water pumps has been experienced due to the effect of face-filming (buildup of crystalline deposits) . Seal leakage failures are related to the sealing face materials, the coolant formulation, and the mechanical seal design. Over the last few years, sintered silicon carbide as a low friction material has found increased acceptance and usage as a water pump seal face material to withstand more stringent service conditions for wear resistance, thermal shock resistance, and stability of shape.
This paper discusses the relationship of key material properties and surface characteristics on face-filming and service life improvement. Aspects of seal design, face material combinations, and new material developments are discussed.
