Electronically Assisted Steering 920268

The purpose of the electronically Assisted Steering System (EAS) project was the design and implementation of the control hardware. It was engineered so as to reduce size, cost, and power consumption. The unique features that set this EAS system apart from other EAS and hydraulic systems are conservation of energy and high mechanical stiffness, giving direct steering control.
The system was designed to only use power in a turning situation, whereas the conventional unit requires continuous power. In the event of an electrical failure the system will provide a fail-safe mechanism that will allow the driver to retain control through a direct link between the steering rack and steering wheel. The EAS system is the next logical step in automotive steering design.
