Development of a Plastic Casing Air Cleaner for Medium-Duty Vehicles 912508

The need for weight saving on medium-duty vehicles is increasing gradually and the application of plastic air cleaners has been investigated very actively. We have therefore started a study of this application. This paper describes the development process of a plastic casing air cleaner.
By using FEM an optimum shape of a plastic air cleaner was established and the weight of the plastic air cleaner was reduced by approximately 2 kilograms when compared to the conventional steel air cleaner.
