Information Requirements for Space Station Freedom EVA 911526

NASA has accumulated EVA experience from the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and NSTS orbiter missions. This experience is the basis for planning advanced EVA supporting assembly and maintainance of Space Station Freedom (SSF), and support of future exploration initiatives with advanced EVA.
This paper provides an analysis of software supported information requirements for advanced EVA. Briefly reviewed are:
  • Historical EVA - types and purposes
  • Types of EVA missions planned for SSF
  • Information requirements supporting EVA missions.
Information requirements explored in this paper to support advanced EVA fall into three general categories - pre, in-progress, and post-EVA:
  1. 1.
Pre-EVA information requirements include familiarization of the crew person with the task to be performed, including the Orbital Replacement Unit (ORU) to be maintained or experiment to be manipulated, identification of tools and replacement ORUs to perform the task, ORU changeout and other instructions, estimates of time to complete the tasks, prioritization of tasks, requisitions from inventory of replacement ORUs, and other pre-EVA information.
  2. 2.
In-progress EVA information requirements include detailed instructions for work as it progresses, including tool selection, and ORU removal/replacement or experiment manipulation with graphics or text to provide on-site instruction.
  3. 3.
Post-EVA information requirements include logging of maintenance and inventory data. This data includes ORU identification, history, damage and wear trend analysis, and other changeout data to facilitate future replacements/maintenance.
Computer hardware and software to accomplish these tasks will be identified, including helmet mounted displays and maintenance, inventory management, and other software applications.
