Power Augmentation for Turbocharged Engines by Using a Pulse Combustor 890648

In this paper a new method is proposed for improving the performance of turbocharged internal combustion engines. By using a pressure gain combustor downstream of the turbine it is possible to boost the net power of the engine under full load condition, improve the transient characteristics and improve the pollutant emissions level, particularly during transients. The improvement in performance is relatively significant at part load and/or low speed conditions. However, there is a significant penalty in specific fuel consumption. A parametric study is presented to illustrate gains that can be realized with this method.
