Head Up Display Using a Graphic Liquid Crystal Display 890289

A new Head Up Display (HUD), using a graphic Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), is proposed.
Double-layered Super-Twisted Nematic (D-STN) LCD, which realizes a black/white display with high contrast, is one of the most promising solutions among several liquid crystal display modes. Contrast ratio is typically higher than 100 and operating temperature range is −20 °C to 70°C.
Backlight is also a problem to realize LCD-HUD. Hot-cathode fluorescent tube is used in our prototype HUD. Luminance of the display can be tuned from 40 cd/m2 to 1,200 cd/m2.
D-STN is proved to be a promising display device for HUD.
