First Experiences in Testing a New Multicomponent Exhaust Gas Sampling and Analyzing System 851659

Initial testing of the prototype of a new multicomponent exhaust emissions measurement system was carried out in an exhaust test laboratory. A series of tests was designed to demonstrate the reliability of the prototype system under routine exhaust emissions testing conditions. The tracer gas concentration profiles reflect a measure of the exhaust gas flow. The concentration profiles for CO, CO2, NO and the various hydrocarbons match the expected profiles for different cars and driving cycles. The versatility of the multicomponent system was demonstrated by the characterization of a series of unregulated components. The concentration profiles were converted to mass profiles by ratioing to the tracer gas profiles and then summing all the data points. The total mass calculations showed some discrepancies to the CVS data. Improvements of the system are made. The start of the final testing is scheduled for the end of 1985.
