PORSCHE is developing a new family of airplane engines for the power range from 200 to 300 hp. Development of the first engine was completed in 1984, and certification to JAR-E and FAR Part 33 is complete. This horizontally-opposed 6-cylinder powerplant with propeller drive has a take-off power of 212 hp with full exhaust muffling. It is fitted with an automatic fuel injection system which works precisely at all altitudes, and is supplied by two electric fuel pumps. The two ignition systems are electronically controlled. Current supply to the engine and to the aircraft is ensured by two independent alternators. The engine is cooled by an engine-driven fan which functions proportionally to power output. The pilot controls engine power, engine speed and mixture to continually optimized values by means of a single lever. The engine can be operated on both AVGAS and MOGAS. The new airplane engine is notable for low operating cost, low exterior noise levels, minimum vibration and noise inside the aircraft and ease of control. Development work on a supercharged version and a version for aerobatic flight is nearing completion.
