The 1955 Lincoln Turbo Drive transmission is of the torque converter type with 3-speed planetary gear box. Its 2.40/1. Low gear, plus a highly efficient torque converter with 2.l/l stall torque ratio, provides adequate ratio coverage to permit the use of a 3.07/1 axle ratio and still maintain excellent over-all performance.
In Drive range, starts can be made in either Low or Intermediate gears at the driver’s option. Normal starts are made in Intermediate gear, however, Low gear is available at speeds be-low 20 mph by depressing the accelerator thru the detent. Intermediate gear, 1.46/1, provides adequate start up performance for normal conditions and is also available as a highway passing gear at speeds up to 76 mph.
Cooling of the Turbo Drive transmission is accomplished by circulation of air thru the converter housing. No heat exchanger is required.
Precision aluminum castings are used extensively in the Lincoln transmission. weight of the complete transmission with all attaching parts, but without oil, is 210 lbs.
