ELECTRON Microscopic Investigations of Surface Structure 450221

A DISCUSSION of some of the applications of the electron microscope to the study of surfaces is presented here.
The author discusses in detail one technique applicable to the study of the surfaces of rigid solids. He includes examples along the two main lines of study, namely:
  1. 1.
The structure of the bulk material as revealed by suitable etching techniques (metallography).
  2. 2.
The structure of the surface regions as they affect such factors as friction and wear, corrosion, adhesion of paints, and surface films.
