Development of an Assessment Methodology to Measure Effects of Geometrical Clearance of Bowden Type Shifting Cable on Gearshift Quality in Passenger Car 2019-26-0341

In Indian passenger vehicle Industry, customer’s expectations are becoming more challenging day by day. Gearshift feeling has become most demanding and considered as one of the major area of focus during transmission development.
Transmission shifting system helps driver to interface with the vehicle drivetrain along-with other systems. It primarily consists of two systems i.e. Peripheral system and Shift system inside the transmission. Peripheral system includes Gear Shift Lever with knob and shift Cable Assembly. Shift system inside the transmission includes Shift Tower Assembly, Shift Forks and Synchronizer Rings etc. Both the systems play an important role in defining the overall gear shift feeling. Any undesired friction in either of these systems deteriorates gearshift feeling which can cause discomfort to driver while engaging or disengaging the gears.
Current paper explains the work done to understand the effect of geometrical clearance of Bowden type shifting cable on gear shifting quality and development of methodology for objective evaluation of gear shifting feeling.
