Ethernet in Infotainment - Challenges and Solutions 2014-01-0250

In the last few years Ethernet has gained a lot of momentum in the automotive world. At the same time, several automotive OEMs introduced Ethernet as On Board Diagnostic interface for production vehicles. In 2013, we see the second wave deployment with Ethernet being used in driver assistance systems (i.e. surround camera).
The next logical step will be the use of Ethernet in Infotainment. Ethernet has already been used for many years in the Consumer and Professional Audio world, thus it suggests itself to look at the available solutions and evaluate whether they can be reused in Automotive.
The presentation focuses at the specific challenges in the car and analyzes the benefits and drawbacks of the potential alternatives. We look at a number of potential scenarios, e.g. AVB class A, AVB class B, AVA, RTP and UDP. Each has its own pros and cons in channel utilization, required CPU core performance, buffer requirements… Additional attention is required for special automotive requirements, e.g. startup time and other features of the standards might not yield the benefits intended for other environments (e.g. stream reservation). The focus is on results gained by actual implementations instead of just a theoretical analysis. Concrete Implementation Solutions for Series production will be presented.
