Experimental Investigation on Performance and Emission Characteristics of Dual Fuel DI Diesel Engine with Hydrogen Fuel 2009-26-0032

Hydrogen is one of the most promising alternate fuels due to its clean burning characteristics and better performance as compared to fossil fuels. In addition to the need for finding effective solutions to the problem of air pollution from combustion processes, increasing pressure is being placed to find alternative fuel to replace the rapidly depleting petroleum fuels. Numerous research works have been carried out on using hydrogen as a fuel in Spark Ignition (SI) engine. However the major drawback of using hydrogen in a SI engine is the reduction in power output of the engine by about 30% in addition to problems like pre ignition, back fire and knocking at higher loads. Hence the use of hydrogen in a SI engine is limited. In the present experimental investigation, the performance and emission characteristics were studied on a Direct Injection (DI) diesel engine with hydrogen inducted along with air using carburetion technique and Timed Port Injection Technique (TPI) and Timed Manifold Injection (TMI) with diesel as a source of ignition. Results showed that the specific energy consumption and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission increased by 6% and 8% respectively with a reduction in brake thermal efficiency and smoke level by 5% and 8% respectively in carburetion technique compared to baseline diesel. But in the timed port injection, the specific energy consumption reduced by 15% and smoke level by 18%. The brake thermal efficiency and NOx increased by 17% and 34% respectively compared to baseline diesel. There is no significant variation in performance between port and manifold injection, however, the specific emissions of CO, HC are lesser in port injection. The hydrocarbons (HC), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon dioxide (CO2) were lesser in both carburetion and timed port injection technique compared to baseline diesel.
