Applying Spin Welding Technology to Replace Current Quick Connect Installation Processes 2006-01-0133

In January of 2004 ITT launched production of its new Spin Weld Fuel Line Quick Connector system on a European automotive platform. This technology uses a spin welding process to permanently assemble plastic quick connectors to plastic fuel tubing. Current industry practice is to mechanically insert a barbed end form into the tubing. This method relies on the hoop strength of the tubing to assure long term integrity of the joint. The resultant joint is a significant advancement in long term structural integrity. It has passed all sections of SAE J2044 and SAE J2045 (the industry standards for fuel line quick connectors) as well as a variety of additional test protocols to assure long term durability and flawless functionality. Designs of Experiment (DOE) were critical to the final development of this new application for spin welding.
