Non-Linear Vehicle Dynamics Using Bifurcation Methods 2004-01-3533

1

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the use of bifurcation analysis in analysing the global dynamics of vehicles, i.e. over wide parameter ranges through which the dynamics vary in a significantly non-linear manner, and in the process to detect regions of stability and instability. The analysis is also used to evaluate the effect of varying design parameters on the vehicle dynamics. In the cases investigated here the position of the centre of gravity proved to be the most sensitive parameter, and the loss of vehicle stability is shown to be caused by a fold bifurcation as the centre of gravity moves towards the the rear axle.
