Optimisation of 2.0 litre Turbocharged Intercooled IDI Diesel Engine to meet Euro III N1 class emission norms 2001-28-0073

The human kind is accredited to a lot of achievements in the last few centuries, especially in the field of Science and Technology. This is done basically to improve the quality of life in this planet. But in doing so, they have made the life in fact miserable by disturbing the ecological balance of earth. This is caused by the ill effects of various bye products produced. These are industrial waste, vehicular gaseous pollutants etc.
A lot of steps are being taken to reduce the various forms of pollutants. The pollution caused by vehicles has been frequently monitored in the past few decades. Various norms are in force in different parts of the world to control this.
This paper describes the development work carried out on a vehicle fitted with 2.0 litre turbocharged, intercooled IDI diesel engine to meet Euro III N1 class exhaust emission norms. The major focus of the developmental work was to achieve the results in the most cost-effective way in the shortest possible time. Hence, it was decided not to venture into Electronic Control as far as possible, as this requires a lot of engine mapping and subsequent proving trials.
The development was carried out from the following angles. Initially, the Fuel Injection Equipment was optimised to reduce the NOx emission level by proper tuning of the part load injection advance characteristics and rate of injection. With the optimised Fuel Injection Equipment, an Exhaust Gas Recirculation system was developed with proper EGR rate and uniform distribution of the exhaust gas. With the correct EGR system and FIE in position, the catalytic convenor was optimised to have suitable exhaust gas conversion. All these techniques were supported by an electrical logic for smooth operation of the vehicle.
With all these, the vehicle was successfully homologated for Euro III N1 emission norms.
