Development of Crankshaft Configuration Design 2001-01-1008

Weight reduction of the crankshaft has been required to lighten the automobile engine. However, makeshift measures for such reduction often cause the increase of bearing load, and bring about more vibration/noise.
This paper presents a method to calculate bearing load with consideration of flexibility of crankshaft, the vibration of engine, and the method to optimize the configuration of crankshaft on the basis on the above-mentioned calculation.
The paper shows that these methods can be used to design a crankshaft configuration that can reduce both bearing load and weight of an in-line four-cylinder-engine crankshaft.
