Communication Framework for Remote Vehicle Access 2000-01-0150

Computers on-board vehicles today can communicate with specialized in-vehicle instruments through standard serial connectors and standard protocols. With the emergence of Internet technologies and wireless links, we can extend on this communication outside the vehicle to remote locations - we can monitor and control a vehicle from across the plant or around the world. This paper describes a framework for interacting with vehicles from anywhere in the world using existing vehicle network interfaces and standard Internet protocols. The first implementation of this framework uses J1979 [1], a Gryphon vehicle interface [2], and a standard web browser running Java applets to interact with target vehicles. In addition to describing the implementation, this paper explores some of the possible applications of this framework.
