Static Bending Light - A New Light Function for Modern Headlamp Systems 1999-01-1212

Modern cars require innovative technical solutions in several areas. The headlamp systems of today are designed especially to pass legal requirements all over the world.
Since 3 years age continued discussion was started to improve the quality of light distributions for headlamp systems with new regulations. The project is called AFS (Advanced Front Lighting Systems) and it relied to dynamic changing of light distributions depending of traffic area and condition. The legislation procedure for AFS will not be closed before the year of 2003. Up to this time we think about improvement of lighting quality by using light functions which can be realized within the legal legislation procedures of today.
In our paper we will describe a new light function called Static Banding Light. The target is to add to the well known dipped beam light distribution in Xenonor Halogen-technology a banding light function which gives light in areas which normally are not reached by a standard dipped beam. A standard dipped beam light distribution illuminates the traffic room directly in the front of the car up to far distance areas of more than 100 m. The side areas closed to the car up to a distance of 20 - 30 m are not illuminated by this distribution. This “No man's land” could be illuminated by a special light function which is described in this paper.
The paper starts with the analysis of illumination on the street, goes over the development of a new light function and ends describing a complete system.
