In the context of decarbonization, the widespread usage of carbon-free energy carriers enjoys growing popularity. Among other options, hydrogen (H2) is commonly considered as one of the most promising energy carriers, which can also be used as a fuel for internal combustion engines (ICEs). In addition to retrofitting of conventional diesel combustion engines for developing modern H2-ICEs, also the exhaust tailpipe design requires attention, since H2-fueled ICEs typically emit nitrogen oxides (NOx) that need to be reduced in an after-treatment system.
