The motivation is to develop automated optimization tools that would ultimately cut cycle time of a new product design. This is often needed for a fast response to the market changes. Therefore, the objective is to present an overview and perspective of some recently developed methodologies that integrate computational fluid dynamics into aerodynamic design optimization. The major components are the analytical sensitivities that improve the accuracy and the efficiency of this process. In addition to the mathematical framework, the paper includes a synopsis of their applications.
